Grain Handler | Westmere

Employment Type:  Permanent (Full Time)
Business Area:  Operations & Commercial
Division:  Operations

Westmere, Victoria, AU

A shared passion for our people.

Our people can be proud that, as a leading international agri-business, we provide an increasingly important service across the food and beverage supply chain.

About our team

Our unique mix of agribusiness and processing operations connects grain growers with domestic and international customers, to process grain and oilseeds into food and feed ingredients. As the largest grain storage and handling network on the east coast of Australia, we operate more than 150 regional receival sites and seven bulk port terminals.

We store and market wheat, barley, canola, sorghum and specialty commodities, connecting over 10,000 growers with more than 1,000 end-market customers across the food, beverage, edible oils and animal feed industries. Feeding the world is a big responsibility and partnering with growers and customers to meet this challenge is what drives us to improve and evolve.

About the role

We are currently seeking a Grain Handler for an immediate start at our Westmere site (working at other nearby sites as required).

Grain handlers at our country grain storage sites are critical to ensuring that we service local grain growers and customers efficiently and safely in receiving, storing, maintaining and out-loading grain. The grains we handle include wheat, barley and chickpeas mainly, but we also take in canola, sorghum and other commodities.

The core activities of a grain handler include:

  • Sampling grain received at the site (spearing using automatic or manual spears and then testing for protein, moisture and contaminants against specifications, entering data into our system)
  • Receiving sampled grain via truck at the weighbridge and entering weights into our system
  • Monitoring the flow of grain from truck unloading and onto hopper, auger or other equipment
  • Protecting and storing grain in bunkers or permanent silo storage (includes building, breaking-down and tarping bunkers)
  • Sweeping, shovelling, blowing down dust and other general housekeeping activities including site presentation
  • Operating equipment including augers, tractors, hoppers, loaders.

The type of work you undertake depends on the skills, experience, knowledge and tickets or licences you hold as well as the requirements of the site at which you’re based. These attributes also help determine the grade we might appoint you at under our enterprise agreement. The agreement will also set out any provisions available to you such as loading, overtime, allowances, etc.

We provide you with the tools and training required to perform your job effectively and safely. We’re also proud to provide genuine opportunities for our people to take on more responsibility, allowing them to progress further, if desired.

About your experience

We’re seeking individuals who align to our values and especially a strong commitment to safety and customer service. You should have sound communication skills and relate well to others. The desire and willingness to learn and accept new challenges is essential.

Applicants with experience in general labouring work, trades and services, building and construction or transport and logistics would be suited to this work, though we are open-minded to a range of experiences. You ideally have an unrestricted driver’s licence, though a provisional licence is okay. Other licences or certifications would be advantageous but not essential (for example loader, skid-steer, H or M class licence, first aid).

In addition to providing proof of working rights, progressed candidates will be required to undertake a pre-employment medical.

Do you share our passion for contributing to the success of a diverse, international team?

At GrainCorp, we value and respect the different perspectives and experiences our people bring to work each day. We aim to increase the diversity of our workforce – leading to a range of different thinking, perspectives and ideas that create the innovation we need to drive better business results. We aim to have a work environment where everyone feels included and everyone can realise their full potential.
